Early Prototype

When historical accounts mention the fact that the VW prototypes of 1935 -1938 did not have rear windows, they seldom include the fact that those cars, never-the-less did have rear view. It was minimal, I grant you. But what the driver did was look through a glass firewall (in at least some of them?) and out the rear engine vents. In the frontal view below, you can clearly see day light through them. The interior view (2nd picture below) shows the same series car (The VW30 of 1937) equipped with an inside rear view mirror for these engine vents!
